FORT MITCHELL — Hoping to boost fund-raising, the Kenton County Democratic Party is reviving a 4-year-old organization designed to raise money for its candidates.

        The Truman Group, named after President Truman, will sponsor a legislative forum Jan. 25 to attract money and publicity.

        “One of the keys to begin winning more elections is raising money,” said Ed Worland, vice chairman of the Kenton County party.

        “It's something the party needs to do more of, and this is a good way to start.”

        The forum, at the Drawbridge Inn, begins at 7:30 a.m. and will feature presentations by:

        • House Speaker Jody Richards of Bowling Green, the top Democrat in the General Assembly and a likely candidate for governor in 2003.

        • Senate Democratic Floor Whip Marshall Long of Shelbyville.

        • Rep. Arnold Simpson of Covington.

        The Truman Club was started with great fanfare four years ago. Gov. Paul Patton even traveled to Covington in April 1996 to help kick off the club's fund-raising efforts.

        To join, members had to pledge $100 (the cost of the Jan. 25 forum).

        The money was to be used to help elect Democrats to county and state office.

        But enthusiasm quickly faded. The group has been largely dormant since that first year and Democrats have not talked much about it until last month, when party leaders began assessing the results of the No vember election.

        As they have for several years, Republicans dominated the Nov. 7 election. Kenton Democrats, who are searching for a new chairman — former Chairwoman Shirley Huelsmann resigned last month — decided that it would have to recharge its fund-raising to compete.

        “It's not all about money,” Mr. Worland said.

        “We know we have the candidates (who) can truly and accurately represent the people of Kenton County. But you need money to get that message out there.”
