Murder of UC student detailed
Teen cops plea, testifies friend was trigger man
By Dan Horn
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The two thieves needed only a few minutes to rob David Peet of his car, his wallet and the few stray dollar bills in his pocket.
Then they took the only thing the 19-year-old University of Cincinnati student had left.
They ignored his pleas for mercy and shot him four times in the head.
Begged for life
The final minutes of Mr. Peet's life were described in court Monday after one of his accused killers, David McGee, pleaded guilty to murder.
The 17-year-old Finneytown youth admitted that he watched Mr. Peet beg for his life Aug. 14 as another man fired the fatal shots.
Mr. McGee pleaded guilty in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court to a reduced charge of murder and agreed to testify against the other accused killer, 19-year-old Michael Price of Winton Terrace.
Prosecutors said the slaying occurred during a robbery that was planned and carried out by Mr. McGee and Mr. Price.
Good Samaritan
They said the two men approached Mr. Peet, of Springfield Township, in the parking lot of a Taco Bell in Finneytown and asked him for a ride.
Mr. Peet refused at first but relented when the teens told him they were stranded and trying to get home.
He was being a good Samaritan, said Prosecutor Mike Allen.
But Mr. Allen said the teens were looking for a victim, not a ride.
He said they had talked earlier about going out to hit a lick, or pull off a robbery.
Once in the car, Mr. Allen said, Mr. Price pulled out a revolver, took Mr. Peet's money and ordered him into the trunk.
They then drove to a dead-end street and ordered Mr. Peet out.
Mr. Allen said Mr. McGee later told police that the victim begged for his life, pleading don't shoot me as Mr. Price pointed the gun at his head.
After the shooting, Mr. Allen said, Mr. Price drove to a va cant lot and set the car on fire.
In court Monday, Mr. McGee told Mr. Peet's family he didn't intend to kill anyone.
I'd like to apologize, he said. I never intended to hurt David Peet or anything like that.
Mr. McGee will be sentenced April 30 by Judge Robert Kraft. He faces 18 years to life in prison.
Mr. Price is scheduled to go on trial April 23.
He faces a possible death sentence if he is convicted.
