Mini-Marathon poster looks skyward
By Jackie Demaline
The Cincinnati Enquirer
It's no-stop, all go for this year's Humana ChoiceCare Heart Mini-Marathon poster, which will be unveiled today.
The marathon poster is an annual collectible. This year's bold vertical image is a Cincinnati intersection with skyscrapers rising around a stoplight, seen almost from curb level.
I've been wanting to do something like this for a couple of years, says John Maggard, the Terrace Park free-lance illustrator who has been designing the poster for 19 years.
I love architecture the old stuff around Cincinnati, or any city, he says.
The concept was originally a canine looking through a knothole in a fence. The Maggard family's Jack Russell terrier was going to star.
As the design evolved, there's no knothole, the dog was moved up to a billboard. It's not the terrier; it's a friend's pet bulldog.
The marathon poster, printed by the Merten Co., will be officially debuted at 5 p.m. today at Cinergy headquarters. Mr. Maggard will be signing posters.
The Humana ChoiceCare Heart Mini-Marathon 24 will be held on March 24-25 and includes 15K and 5K runs, 10K and 5K walks and a 2K kids Mini-MaraFun.
