SPRINGDALE — In their efforts to combat blocked intersections, Springdale officials have gone high-tech.

        And police here say the solution is working.

        “We still have a problem, but it has gotten a lot better, because the police de partment and the traffic engineers work so closely together,” says Springdale Police Capt. Bill Hafer.

        Problems on Ohio 747 and along Kemper Road around Tri-County Mall have eased in the past eight years with installation of special traffic lights around the mall and along Kemper.

        Sensors in the road detect the volume of traffic each way and a computer constantly adjusts light intervals.

        Springdale also is paying TEC Engineering $2,400 a month to monitor the system with microwave remote technology. This allows intervals to be changed manually during heavy load periods such as last month's holiday shopping season.

        TEC president Ali Saleh has installed the same basic system, which costs as much as $15,000, on top of the $65,000 for a normal traffic light, in North College Hill, Mount Healthy, Sharonville, Mason and Blue Ash.

        Only Springdale signed up for the extra monitoring and that's what makes the difference, Mr. Saleh says.
