Defense was key as Newport Central Catholic scored 26 points off turnovers and went on to a 60-47 victory over Newport in the Ninth Region All “A” Classic final at Newport.

        NewCath led 30-23 at halftime. In the third quarter, Newport's shooting went cold and Newport Central Catholic outscored the Wildcats 12-5 to take a 42-28 lead.

        Freshman Nicole Chiodi scored 19 points and Julie Burks had 16 to lead the Thoroughbreds. Newport Stephanie Atkins scoring 16 points for the Wildcats.

        NewCath advances to the All “A” state tournament on Jan. 23 at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.
