NKU men stunned by St. Joseph's
The Cincinnati Enquirer
RENSSELAER, Ind. Marvin Smith scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half Saturday, including a game-clinching layup with five seconds remaining, as St. Joseph's College upset Northern Kentucky 83-79.
Saint Joseph's held an 80-73 lead with 1:49 remaining, but NKU responded with consecutive 3-pointers by Craig Sanders and Todd Clark to cut the deficit to 80-79.
Jamie Holden gave Saint Joseph's (8-8, 2-5 Great Lakes Valley Conference) an 81-79 lead by making a free throw with 45 seconds left. NKU had a chance to tie, but Clark's jump shot was blocked by Brandon Yates and rebounded by Holden.
Holden missed the front end of the bonus. But Smith then stole an NKU pass and drove in for a layup to give the Pumas their first win against NKU since 1994.
Sanders (McNicholas HS) scored 22 points for fourth-ranked NKU (14-2, 5-2 GLVC).
