St. X, Ursuline leading swim classic

By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The first day of the 18th annual Southwest Ohio Swimming and Diving Classic at St. Xavier's Keating Natatorium went as expected.

St.Xavier, the only team ever to win the boys championship, leads Centerville 378.0 to 270.5, while defending Division I state champion Ursuline dominated in the girls competition with a score of 346.5, ahead of Centerville at 211.

One of the early surprises was Anderson's Megan Tomes, a 15-year-old sophomore who won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:53.09.

“My coach (Ed Bachman) wanted me to go 1:52,” Tomes said. “It felt good tonight and I took time off my morning time (1:54.54).”

A state qualifier in the 50 freestyle (second) and 100 backstroke (10th) as a freshman, Tomes also is entered in today's 500 freestyle, 200 backstroke and 100 freestyle.

“I'm also swimming on four relay teams,” Tomes said. “They'll probably send an ambulance to take me out of here (Sunday) night.”

With only four weeks before the sectional meet, most coaches use the Classic as a barometer to gauge how their swimmers stack up against the competition and which events they should swim.

Another surprising performance was by Kevin Nead, a 15-year-old freshman at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy.

The fastest qualifier in the 200 freestyle at 1:46.31, Nead took second place behind Centerville's Greg Middleton (1:44.34) in the finals.

Also entered in the 100 butterfly, 200 individual medley and 200 butterfly at the Classic, Nead probably will compete in the 500 free style and 200 individual medley at the sectional meet.

“The butterfly is my best stroke, but that event is loaded this year,” Nead said. “That's why I'll probably wait a year and complete in the IM and 500 freestyle.”

Action resumes at 8a.m. today at five sites, with the championship heats set for 7p.m. at St. Xavier.
