        New officers of the Cincinnati chapter of the NAACP were sworn in Sunday during an afternoon ceremony at Bethel Baptist Church in Walnut Hills.

        Norma Holt Davis, 51, a North Avondale lawyer, becomes only the second woman to lead the 3,500-member chapter. The Birmingham, Ala., native succeeds Dr. Milton Hinton, who stepped down after three terms as president.

        Eric Kearney, an attorney with the downtown Cincinnati law firm Cohen, Todd, Kite and Stanford, was elected 1st vice-president.

        Mr. Kearney also is president of Sesh Communications, the largest African-American publishing company in the Tristate. The firm publishes the Cincinnati Herald and The Blackbook.

        Other officers sworn in Sunday include:

        • Juanita Adams, second vice-president;

        • Victoria Wright-Holloway, third vice-president;

        • Wilbur D. Jones, treasurer;

        • Spencer Bouldin, secretary.

        A 24-member executive committee also was sworn in.

        “I expect to continue to have the branch in the forefront, protesting racial discrimination whenever it occurs in this city,” Mrs. Davis, who has a civil law practice, said in an interview with The Enquirer following her election as the new NAACP president.

        Mrs. Davis was part of the branch's legal team that joined with Housing Opportunities Made Equal (HOME) in a 1998 lawsuit against Nationwide Insurance Company. The branch challenged the company's practice of not insuring African-Americans.

        The settlement, agreed to in 1999, included Nationwide paying $750,000 to HOME and the NAACP.

        Last year, she was part of the branch's legal team that developed a 19-point corrective action plan against racial discrimination in city hiring practices. Cincinnati City Council approved the plan in February.
