TV vs. reality, Bartlet vs. Bush
How the administrations of 'West Wing' and George W. stack up
By Mike Pulfer
The Cincinnati Enquirer
We know. We know.
Over and over, we've heard readers say they wished Josiah Bartlet were moving into the White House.
Considering that he doesn't exist except in the scripts of television's The West Wing that probably won't happen.
But there's always a chance you'll see signs of him and his fictitious, idealistic staff in real people in almost-real Washington D.C. or in your local newspaper.
While organizational charts won't match up line-for-line, title-for-title, there are correlations from television to real people with real responsibilities in the up-and-coming George W. Bush administration. Here's a look at who is who in both administrations:
On TV

Martin Sheen
|
President Josiah Bartlet (Martin Sheen). First-term New Hampshire Democrat with deep convictions and country-lawyer charisma; Nobel laureate in economics.
Vice President John Hoynes (Tim Matheson). Seldom seen, often stubborn.
White House Chief of Staff Leo McGarry (John Spencer). Street smart; politically savvy workaholic and recovering alcoholic; Bartlet's closest ally and confidant.
Deputy White House Chief of Staff Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford) Skilled strategist, often over-opinionated; helped get Bartlet elected.
Communications Director Toby Ziegler (Richard Schiff). Smart as a whip, with a cynical sense of humor.
Deputy Communications Director Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe) Politically-bent, with much to learn; dedicated to crafting appropriate presidential responses to variety of situations.
Press Secretary C.J. Cregg (Allison Janney). Fired from lucrative Hollywood public-relations job on the day she was tapped for Bartlett's campaign.
Presidential Personal Aide Charlie Young (Dule Hill). African-American straight-arrow and youngest member of the crew; involved with the president's daughter.
First Lady Abby Bartlet (Stockard Channing). Strong partner (with an M.D.) intent on protecting her husband where he needs protecting.
Zoey Bartlet, the president's daughter (Elisabeth Moss). Typical, bright, liberal-minded college student .
