Probe of morgue photos continues
By Kristina Goetz
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Hamilton County coroner's office announced late Friday that officials have identified 12 cases in which unauthorized photos were taken at the morgue.
Coroner Carl Parrott said he has notified several family members and expressed his personal apology. He is in the process of notifying additional family members.
Dr. Parrott indicated that he is doing everything possible to protect the dignity and privacy of their deceased loved one(s). He could not be reached for additional comment.
Officials are still investigating how Thomas Condon of Mount Auburn obtained access to areas that should have been off-limits to him.
He allegedly took photographs of corpses in various stages of autopsy, posed with objects such as a snail shell, sheet music, an old photograph and an Alice in Wonderland book. One photo showed a woman's face with an old-fashioned key placed across her lips.
Investigators say Mr. Con don has had access to the morgue since the summer and was supposed to be doing some testing to determine the kinds of equipment he would need to produce a training video.
Cincinnati Police Sgt. Dave Lovett said it will be another week before all the evidence is collected and sent to the prosecutor's office.
Mr. Condon has has not been charged with a crime.
Hamilton County commissioners and citizens who worried their loved ones were photographed have put pressure on the coroner's office to identify those posed as subjects.
Randy Hanzlick, president of the National Association of Medical Examiners, said the incident is worrisome. He can see, though, how it may have happened.
He doesn't see the Cincinnati incident as a problem with operations in the coroner's office but a personnel issue with the individual. Although autopsy photos have sometimes been leaked around the country, Mr. Hanzlick said he has never heard of a situation like this.
