Truck fumes sicken officers

By David Eck

Two police officers experienced lightheadedness and nausea Thursday after coming in contact with a tractor-trailer truck that had contained a chemical and was emitting a strong odor.

The officers were treated at local hospitals and released. Both were back at work Friday, police said.

Blue Ash Police Officer Weldon Julien first stopped the truck about noon Thursday on Cornell Road because it was leaking an unknown substance. The driver, Boris Markman, 47, of New Jersey, said the truck was empty and had just been cleaned, police said. The truck left, but the officer became lightheaded and developed a headache a short time later.

Police then issued a general alert for the truck.

At 12:52 p.m. the truck was stopped on north Interstate 71 near Wilmington by Motor Carrier Enforcement Officer Gary Peace. He, too, became sick after several minutes, said Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Jeffrey Greene.

The truck was found to have contained thioglycol, a solvent for dyes. It had emptied its load in Reading, but was emitting fumes from the chemical, Lt. Greene said.

I-71 was closed in both directions about 90 minutes.
