Elder drops Purcell

The Cincinnati Enquirer

        Mike Mahon, Phil Bengel and Steve Miller combined to score 20 points in the second and third quarters when Elder pulled away for a 69-50 win over Purcell Marian Friday night.

        It was the second straight Greater Catholic League loss for the Cavaliers, ranked No.3 in the Enquirer's Divisions II-IV coaches poll. The Panthers are ranked No.3 in the Division I coaches poll.

        Keith Jackson scored a game-high 22 points for Purcell. Mahon finished with 11 points to lead Elder.

Records: E 10-3 (GCL 5-2), P 7-6 (3-5) • Moeller 59, Badin 42 — Matt Sylvester, playing his first game since being suspended two games by the Ohio High School Athletic Association, scored 11 of his game-high 23 points in the third quarter to rally the Crusaders.

        Nick Monserez's 3-pointer at the end of the first half tied the game 23-23. Monserez finished with a season-high 21 points for Moeller, the No.4 team in the Enquirer's Division I coaches poll.

        Sylvester, who was suspended for an altercation earlier in the season, also had 11 rebounds, and Monserez grabbed eight for Moeller.

        David Mergy led Badin with 12 points.

        • St. Xavier 60, Chaminade-Julienne 37 — The Bombers took a 16-2 first-quarter lead and were never threatened.

        John Shriver scored 12 points, Jordan Cornette had 10 and Mike Grogan had nine to lead St.Xavier.

        Jermiel Adkins paced the Eagles with 12 points.

        • Kettering Alter 57, Roger Bacon 53 — Senior center Adam Waleskowski had 11 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots to lead Alter. Fourth-quarter free throws were key for the Knights, who made 15 of their 20 attempts.

        • La Salle 55, McNicholas 44 — Doug Kruthaupt sank 12 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter, enabling the Lancers to down the Rockets in GCL action at LaSalle.

        After McNicholas pulled within two at 32-30, the Lancers scored four consecutive points and go go ahead by six.
