DAYTON The Newport Central Catholic fans were stating the obvious Saturday when they chanted They're not Ronny.
And Ronny NewCath senior guard Ronny Dawn didn't disappoint. Dawn scored 20 points to lead the Thoroughbreds to their second straight Touchstone Energy Boys Ninth Region All A Classic, a 58-39 win over St. Henry at Dayton High School.
NewCath, the No.2 team in The Enquirer's Northern Kentucky coaches poll and the fourth-ranked team in the state, meets either Glasgow of the Fourth Region in the opening round of the state tournament at 9:30 p.m. Thursday at Eastern Kentucky University.
Second time around, you appreciate it more, he said. It's tougher to do it twice.
Saturday's title was the fourth one for Ronny's dad, NewCath coach Ron Dawn (the Thoroughbreds also won in 1991 and 1992).
I thought we played well, Ron Dawn said of the newest championship. That was a good job defensively.
Ron Dawn was referring his team's defense, which held St, Henry to six points in the third quarter and 17 in the second half.
Losing to NewCath is always tough for St. Henry coach Dave Faust to take. He's a 1977 NewCath alumnus, and he played basketball with Ron Dawn.
They were making it tough for us to get it inside, Faust said. We didn't get good looks at the basket, and they did.
Andrew Vieth's 3-pointer gave St. Henry an 8-3 lead with 4:45 left in the first quarter. Ronny Dawn hit a three from the right side to close it to 8-6.
Ronny Dawn struggled, too, thanks to St. Henry senior guard David Franks. He held Dawn scoreless for nearly six minutes of the second quarter.
He did a great job, Ronny Dawn said. He's quick.
NewCath senior forward Jeff Colson's 3-pointer gave NewCath a 24-16 lead with 2:19 left in the half.
NewCath finished St. Henry in the third quarter.
It was the result of the balanced attack Ron Dawn loves: Senior center Corey Myers' layup off a Ronny Dawn assist plus a Dawn 3-pointer later; two Colson 3-pointers; one basket by senior point guard Vince Bonhaus; and senior forward Seth Lynn's 3-pointer.
The result: a 16-3 NewCath run, a 42-25 lead with 2:09 left in the quarter, and the title.
That's what makes us so good, Ronny Dawn said. We don't just rely on one guy. That'll be a part of our team in Richmond and the rest of the year.
