ALEXANDRIA Chris Ryan's 26 points helped Bishop Brossart to a 65-51 win over Silver Grove in the finals of the Touchstone Energy 10th Region All A Classic at Brossart's Seither Center Monday.
The Mustangs meet Allen Central (15th Region) in the opening round of the state small-school tournament at 8 p.m. Thursday at Eastern Kentucky University. The Mustangs go downstate for the first time in school history.
I'm joining you down at Eastern, said Ryan to Katie Schwegmann, who will lead the Lady 'Stags to their fourth-straight All A tournament. It's about time we get both teams.
The Mustangs had not been to an All A regional final since 1998, while the Big Trains (17-1) hadn't had a shot at a regional basketball title of any kind since the 1970s.
Silver Grove never got going. The Big Trains committed 17 turnovers, and their 17-of-43 shooting from the field included 7-of-22 from 3-point range.
I don't know if we were nervous, Silver Grove coach Steve Hart said. We lost to a good team. There's a reason they don't give up 50 points (a game).
Silver Grove senior guard Chad McCarter leads the Tristate with 26.7 points a game. He was held to 19 Monday.
I felt like Chris needed a challenge, Brossart coach Willie Schlarman said. I think his (6-foot-3) height really bothered Chad.
Brossart led 16-5 after eight minutes. Silver Grove closed the gap to 23-15, but a 17-6 run gave Brossart a 40-21 lead with 4:42 left in the third quarter.
