N.Ky. girls basketball games


NCC advances, Brossart falls in girls All 'A'

        Newport Central Catholic advanced to the semifinals of the girls Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic with a 61-33 victory over Lexington Christian Friday at McBrayer Arena in Richmond.

        NewCath took a 15-4 first-quarter lead and extended it to 29-13 at halftime.

        Senior center Amy Meyers had 12 points, and Nicole Chiodi and Julie Burks each scored 11 points for the Thoroughbreds.

        But another Northern Kentucky team, Bishop Brossart, made only 36 percent of its shots from the field (19-of-53) and lost to Jackson County 60-44. Jackson County is ranked No.1 in Kentucky and No.12 in the USA Today Super 25.

        The Mustangs shot a respectable 43 percent in the first half (12-of-28) and trailed 33-27 at halftime. But they shot only 28 percent in the second half (7-of-25) as Jackson County took control.

        Katie Schwegmann scored a game-high 22 points for Brossart.

        NewCath will play Clinton County, which beat Owen County 62-61 Friday, in a semifinal at 9 a.m. today. Somerset, a 65-35 winner over Campbellsville, will play Jackson County at 10:30 a.m. in the other semifinal. Winners will advance to the final at 1 p.m.

        • Ryle 48, Simon Kenton 24 — Carly Cooper had a career-high 22 rebounds and scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Raiders, who outrebounded the Pioneers 63-29.

        Holly Matteoli added a career-high 18 boards, and sophomore Kristen Smock scored 14 points for Ryle.
