COLUMBUS — Ohio State University officials want a state exemption allowing them to raise tuition in the fall by more than the 6 percent maximum allowed by law.

        Such an exemption would be part of the state budget bill for the next two fiscal years, beginning Jan. 1. Gov. Bob Taft will release his budget recommenda tions Monday.

        Mr. Taft's office has declined to comment about the exemption.

        The state Office of Budget and Management is projecting that yearly tuition for in-state, full- time undergraduates would jump by more than 9 percent, increasing from $4,383 this year to $4,790.

        The cap exemption is supported by the Ohio Board of Regents, which provides money for the state's public colleges.
