What's the Buzz?
Ill travelers can get cheaper flights
By James Pilcher
The Cincinnati Enquirer
American Airlines has introduced a new SKYCAARE system that will allow ill passengers the option of flying a cheaper commercial flight, rather than hiring an expensive air ambulance.
The system would allow the purchase of either a first-class or economy seat at a 30-percent discount. The passenger would also hire a registered nurse at $90 per hour for the trip. An air ambulance can cost thousands of dollars, said American officials.
People with medical conditions may need to travel for a variety of reasons, said Dr. David McKenas, American's corporate medical director. Some may need medical care that is not available in their hometown, while others might need to return home after becoming ill during travel.
Initially, the service will be available for American flights out of the airline's Dallas and Chicago hubs, and then added gradually to other flights.
The nurse will consult with the passenger before the flight, but Dr. McKenas stressed that the service may not be right for some passengers.
Travelers requesting SKYCAARE service must be stable for air travel, should not pose a health risk to others and should not be expected to need intensive or extraordinary medical care during flight, he said.
