Miami Notebook

String of MAC finals in jeopardy

By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

OXFORD — Miami has played in the final of the Mid-American Conference tournament each of Charlie Coles' previous four seasons as head coach. Coles thinks that streak will end if the attitude of his players doesn't change.

“These guys think we can do that,” Coles said. “I don't think we can make that kind of a run. This isn't the old Miami. We have to get tougher, and I don't know if this group can do that.”

In the past 10 days Miami has lost home games to teams it was ahead of in the MAC standings: Akron 56-46 Jan.24, and Bowling Green 67-63 in overtime Saturday.

DAVIS OUT: Point guard Doug Davis missed his fifth straight game with a dislocated right big toe. Davis, the team's third-leading scorer at 10.0 points a game, did not dress.

He could return Wednesday with Miami visits Kent State.

KILLER STAT: Miami turned the ball over 18 times Saturday to 13 for BG. Miami is 0-7 when it has more turnovers than the opposition.

“We win a couple of games, and we forget who we are,” Coles said. “We try things we shouldn't think about. We're best when we're careful with the ball.”

BG's athletic perimeter players gave Miami fits. Trent Jackson and Brandon Parton had four steals each.

Miami came in averaging 10.8 turnovers a game, fourth lowest in Division I. The RedHawks have had more than 18 once — against Xavier in the season opener.

STREAK LIVES: Miami pushed its streak of making at least one 3-pointer to 380 games.

The RedHawks' first 3 did not come until Eugene Seals hit one with 2:56 left in regulation.

Jason Grunkemeyer did not attempt a 3 for the first time in 47 games.
