Deerfield fire levy vote tonight

4.8-mill measure may be on May ballot

By Kevin Aldridge
The Cincinnati Enquirer

DEERFIELD TWP. — Township trustees are expected to vote on a resolution at tonight's meeting to add a 4.8-mill continuing fire levy to the May 8 ballot.

The levy would replace the 3.95-mill levy Deerfield Township Fire Rescue now uses for fire and emergency medical services. Township officials say Deerfield's rapid residential and commercial growth has increased the demand for fire services. The escalating costs of fuel, med ical supplies and personnel expenses also are driving the need for more funds.

“Deputy Fire Chief Nathan Bromen has done an outstanding job evaluating the financial needs of our fire department,” Trustee Barbara Reed said. “The budget is conservative, and it allows the department to continue to provide excellent service to our residents. I am confident that the voters in Deerfield Township will support this levy.”

Three years ago, 92 percent of township voters approved a 3.95-mill levy to replace funding from the Mason-Deerfield Joint Fire District. This new levy, expect ed to generate about $3.1 million annually, would be the first tax increase asked for in five years.

Fire Chief William Kramer said the levy would allow Deerfield Township to provide competitive wages and to increase the number of full-time employees. It would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $147 a year — a $26 increase from the current levy.

In other business, trustees will review Deerfield's 2001 operating budget and its contribution to Metro's reverse commute bus service. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Landen Station, 3292 W. U.S. 22/Ohio 3.
