What Tristaters are reading
Fred Baum, Co-owner, Holiday Auto Theatre, Hanover Township:
The Flamingo Rising by Larry Baker (Knopf; $24).
The whole thing takes place at an extremely large drive-in in Florida. It's a sort of soap opera, with a neighbor who frowns greatly on the neon and so forth. It sort of reminds me of us. It's good fun, especially if you own one of these.
Matthew J. Freudenberg, Independent filmmaker
Making Movies by Sidney Lumet (Vintage Books; $12)
As an aspiring filmmaker, I try to learn the techniques, theory and skill of making movies. For a few weeks I stopped buying DVDs and purchased books. Of all the books I read, Making Movies was the most gripping. He shows a side of filmmaking that I was never exposed to before. . . . If you read this book, you will have a much deeper respect for all movies even the ones that stink.
