Our juvenile court, which has one judge, handles 9,000 cases the same caseload that Lorain County handles with three juvenile judges, Mr. Piper said, following his testimony before the criminal justice committee of the Ohio House of Representatives.
State Rep. Shawn Webster, R-Millville, sponsored the bill that would create the judgeship. The measure must undergo several more steps before it would go to a final vote.
As Butler County has grown, so has the number of court cases, Mr. Piper said. He said he does not want to see those cases clog the juvenile justice system. You need the administration of justice to be swift so it's effective for youthful offenders and for victims, Mr. Piper said.
He said the county's Bar Association, Common Pleas Court and the Ohio Supreme Court support Mr. Webster's bill.
