OK, 'Survivor' fans, it's three down and 12 to go

By John Kiesewetter
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Here's a quick TV survival guide as the Tristate awaits the fourth episode of Survivor: The Australian Outback (8 p.m. today, Channels 12, 7) featuring Rodger Bingham, the Grant County High School industrial arts teacher from Crittenden, Ky.:

Goners: Three down, 12 to go. Retired police officer Maralyn “Mad Dog” Hershey was voted out by the Ogakor tribe last week.

Betting line: Rodger's problems (falls during the “immunity challenge,” fear of heights, inability to swim, foot tangled in ropes) keeps him the long shot for CBS' $1-million prize. He's last at 20-1 odds posted by Intertops.com, an Internet sports betting site.

The rest: Colby Donaldson, 4-1; Keith Famie, 5-1; Tina Wesson and Alicia Calaway, 6-1; Jeff Varner, 7-1; Amber Brkich and Nick Brown, 8-1; Michael Skupin, 9-1; Jerri Manthey and Elisabeth Filarski, 10-1; Mitchell Olson, 12-1; and Kimmi Kappenberg 15-1.

Best nickname: “Kentucky Joe,” given Rodger by the Kucha tribe.

Outback snakes: Alicia and Jeff in Rodger's Kucha tribe “are constantly scheming and planning” about who should go. Mr. Varner doesn't trust law student Nick “farther than I can spit,” and says the team could “be stronger without Kentucky Joe.”

Rudy-like moment: The age gap has widened between Rodger and the contestants, as it did for Rudy Boesch in the first Survivor episodes. The ouster of Ms. Hershey, 52, and Debb Eaton, 45, means that Mr. Bingham is 13 years older than Tina, 40, of the Ogakor tribe, and 15 years older than Michael, 38, in his Kucha tribe.

Shameless plug: Tina just happened to mention one of CBS' charter Survivor sponsors in describing her hunger: “I want a bag of Doritos more than anything in the world.”

Fashion statement: Maralyn's “Mad Dog” cap, which she gave to Amber after pal Tina voted Maralyn out of the game.

Big secret: Rodger on the merits of bartender Kimmi, who wasn't seen much last week: “Kimmi is doing a whole lot more than really about everybody else.”

Quote of the week: Says Bob Trumpy, former Super Bowl announcer, NFL player and WLW-AM talk host: “I am absolutely, hopelessly hooked on this program. I couldn't wait for the Super Bowl to end, so I could watch Survivor 2 . . . When the show starts, I just go into a trance.”

Sneak peek: A wild fire threatens one of the camps tonight; Micheal spears an animal for Kucha; Ogakor's chef Keith gets steamed over Jerri, saying: “I didn't come out here to be pushed around by a bartender wannabe actress.”
