February, March full of special gardening events




        Those who value the gifts of the garden won't want to miss a number of special events.

        • At the Heritage Village Museum in Sharon Woods, quilt maker and author Jane Sassaman will be on hand Friday and next Saturday to inspire and teach those who want to learn to make nature-inspired quilts.

    Heritage Village Museum events:
    • Author and quilt maker Jane Sassaman will present “Under the Influence” lecture 10-11:30 a.m. and 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, at the Heritage Village Museum in Sharon Woods Park, 11450 Lebanon Pike/U.S. 42, Sharonville. Fee: $35 for morning session (includes lunch) or $20 for evening session. • Ms. Sassaman's “Abstracting from Nature” workshop will be 9 a.m.-4 p.m. next Saturday. Fee: $55 (lunch included). • Scott G. Kunst's presentation, “Antique Gardens,” will be 6-8 p.m. March 27. Fee: $10.

    Maple sugaring:
    • California Woods, 5400 Kellogg Ave., 9 a.m.-1 p.m. March 11. Fee: $5 adults, $2.50 children (includes pancake breakfast. Call 231-8678.
    • Maple Syrup Festival, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. March 17-18, Mapleberry Farms, 458 Mount Tabor Road, Waverly, Ohio, 35 miles north of Portsmouth. (740) 947-2331.
        She will explain how artists throughout history have interpreted nature and lead participants in creating garden quilt designs.

        • For guidance on planning old-fashioned gardens, the museum on March 27 will host bulb specialist and historian Scott G. Kunst, who owns the United States' only mail-order source for heirloom flower bulbs. He will focus on American gardens and landscapes between 1800-1940.

        • If you'd like to introduce your family to another nature experience that is rich in history, see how maple syrup is made while the sap is running in March.

        • The Ohio Historical Society is planning an exhibit on flower gardening called Ohio's Garden Path. Curators are searching for gardening tools, equipment or garden ornamentation that would have been used in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Letters detailing gardening activities and gardening catalogs produced by Ohio nurseries also are sought. The display is scheduled to open in spring 2002 at the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus.
