Reality check: Rodger popular, but still long shot

By John Kiesewetter
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Here's a quick TV survival guide as the Tristate awaits the fourth episode of Survivor: The Australian Outback (8 p.m. today, Channels 12, 7) featuring Rodger Bingham, the Grant County High School industrial arts teacher from Crittenden, Ky.:

Goners: Four down, 11 to go, after Mitchell Olson, 23, was voted out of Ogakor tribe, the third straight week Rodger's Kucha tribe had won immunity.

Betting line: Michael Skupin's stock has risen after capturing and killing a pig last week, according to odds posted by Intertops.com, an Internet sports betting site. Rodger remains the long shot, though his odds have improved from 20-1 to 15-1.

The latest line: Michael Skupin, 4-1; Alicia Calaway and Colby Donaldson, 5-1; Jeff Varner and Nick Brown, 6-1; Elisabeth Filarski, 7-1; Tina Wesson, 8-1; Keith Famie and Amber Brkich, 10-1; Jerri Manthey, 12-1; Kimmi Kappenberg and Rodger, 15-1.

But Rodger ranks No. 1 in the viewers' popularity poll at CBS.com. He has an 8.4 rating (on a 1-10 scale), followed closely by Elisabeth (8.2). Manipulative Jerri is the least popular, with a lower rating (2.4) than Debb Eaton (2.7), the first person voted out of the game.

Fashion statement: Michael dabbed blood on his cheeks after fatally stabbing the pig. The Humane Society of the United States and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have criticized CBS and Survivor for the prime-time animal slaughter.

Rudy-like moment: While Rudy used his Navy SEAL training in the first series, Rodger's country background has come in handy killing the chicken and the hog (though most of the footage was edited out last week).

Quote of the week: Keith on Jerri, the bartender and aspiring actress: “I came here to win the money. But now my motive isn't to win the money, but to do everything I can to make sure she does not win the money.”

Big secret: Rodger's wife, Pat, “has to lay out (Rodger's) clothes for him in the morning because he cannot seem to match colors,” according to Survivor II: The Field Guide (TV Books; $14.95) by Mark Burnett, Survivor creator and producer.

Sneak peek: See the proclamation presented to Rodger by the Kentucky House of Representatives Tuesday (“this distinguished citizen of Kentucky has continually proven that hard work and tenacity are the keys to success”) and read a biography about Rodger with family photographs at www.jstephenson.com, a Web site created by his cousin, John Stephenson.

Tonight: Jerri tries to lure Colby into her alliance with Amber; Kimmi and Alicia argue; and one woman's lack of hygiene annoys her tribe.
