The Early Word

Jump on your weekend

Last Minute

Ska, punk: Today at Bogart's, it's third-wave ska and punk with Less Than Jake, Anti-Flag, New Found Glory and Teen Idols. 8 p.m.; $15 at Bogart's box office.

Pop/rock: Magus Productions brings a singer/songwriter show to York Street Cafe today with Richard Buckner. Niki Buerhig opens the 8 p.m. show. Mr. Buckner's new CD The Hill is a collection of Edgar Lee Masters poems set to music. $12 at the door; 779-9462.

Countdown

Soprano sings: Soprano Sebronette Barnes, 1992 Taft Museum Duncanson Artist-in-Residence, performs an evening of arias and spirituals, 8 p.m. Saturday at the Fitton Center for Creative Arts, Hamilton. Her program, “From the Field to the Stage,” will pay tribute to the African-American classical artist. Ron Matson is pianist. Tickets: $10 adults; $5 students. (513) 863-8873.

Alteractive event: What are The 50 Shoes? Not merely “post-modern art rock for the new millennium.” The band's multimedia performances are part poetry, part rock, part dance, part visual art (with those aforementioned shoes interpreted in paintings and video). Sounds like a Playhouse alteractive event. 7 p.m. Monday, Playhouse plaza, Eden Park. Tickets $8. 421-3888.

Jubilee Singers: They have sung for kings, queens, prime ministers and presidents. The Fisk Jubilee Singers perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, Princeton High School, Sharonville (tickets $10; $5 students). The 12-voice chorale boasts a musical tradition going back to 1871. Fisk University ranks as one of the top 50 U.S. colleges for black students. Information: 731-0303.

Movie Buzz

Co-star for Cruise: British actress Samantha Morton has just signed on to co-star in Steven Spielberg's Minority Report for Fox and DreamWorks and will star opposite Tom Cruise and Colin Farrell (Tigerland) in what is touted as a sci-fi drama. In the film, Mr. Cruise plays a detective hunted by a colleague (Mr. Farrell) and charged with a murder he hasn't yet committed. Ms. Morton's character connects with the fleeing detective.

Last week Ms. Morton was honored by the London Film Critics Circle for her performance in Woody Allen's Sweet and Lowdown. She received an Oscar nomination last year for that same role. Ms. Morton first gained the attention of critics worldwide with her work in the British dramas Under the Skin and Dreaming of Joseph Lees.

Ms. Morton recently finished shooting Eden alongside Arthur Miller, and is about to begin work on Morvern Callar for director Lynn Ramsay (Ratcatcher).

Production on Minority Report and Morvern Callar is set to begin in the spring.
