Kentucky state swimming

Beechwood's Swafford makes four finals

By Ray Schaefer
Enquirer contributor

LEXINGTON — Beechwood sophomore Wesley Swafford wasn't sure she knew how to swim the breaststroke Friday, but it didn't hurt her 200-yard individual medley time a bit.

Swafford's time of 2:06.81 was the fastest in preliminary heats at the University of Kentucky's Lancaster Aquatic Center. She also qualified in the 100 freestyle (in 54.30 seconds) and she is part of the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.

But it was the 200 IM that surprised Swafford.

“That's the fastest I've gone,” she said. “I dropped six seconds from last year.”

Chris Woolford, Swafford's Cincinnati Marlins coach, expected a first-place finish.

“Every time she's hit the water in the 200 IM, she's taken a second or two off,” Woolford said. “She doesn't have a weak stroke.”

The order of strokes for the 200 IM is butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. Swafford said her breaststroke is the weakest, which means her strategy today is simple: go out hard the first two legs ...

“And pray I can bring it back as fast in the second half,” Swafford said.

Covington Catholic senior Brett Hoersting swam the 100 free in 47.14, the fastest time at the meet and nearly a second quicker than his 48.13 at the Northern Kentucky regional meet two weeks ago.

But Hoersting wasn't happy. “It's not my best time,” Hoersting said. “I should be a half-second or a second faster (today).”

Hoersting's performance in the 100 freestyle was just the beginning.

He qualified third in the 50 freestyle in 21.76. He joined sophomore Sean Pharr, junior Matt Wilson and senior Matthew Bertke to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:27.82) and senior Phil Rugari, Wilson and Bertke to take first in the 400 freestyle relay (3:16.38).

Since there are no points for preliminary results, the Colonels don't know if they can upset 12-time defending boys champion Louisville St. Xavier, but the Colonels and Tigers are close in numbers of athletes advancing to either the championship or consolation finals. St. Xavier has 24, while CovCath has 20.

“It's really close,” Hoersting said. “I try not to think about it. It would be nice.”

Like CovCath, Notre Dame doesn't know if it can catch six-time defending girls champion Louisville Sacred Heart. But coach Karen Bresser-Jones isn't worried, though she said a top-three finish would be fine.

“That's a good goal,” Bresser-Jones said. “Last year we were fifth. Our goal is to move up.”
