CovCath wraps up poll title

        Covington Catholic, No.1 in The Enquirer's Northern Kentucky boys basketball coaches poll, all but wrapped up the poll title with a 72-57 victory over Bishop Brossart Friday night in the regular-season finale.

        The Colonels, who won their seventh straight game and 17th of their last 18 after a 3-4 start, should be crowned champions in the final poll, which comes out Monday.

        CovCath beat No.2 Newport Central Catholic 62-61 earlier this week.

        CovCath's Chad Wachs led all scorers with 17 points against Brossart. Adam Quast added 13 points for Covington Catholic. Chris Ryan led Brossart with 14 points.

        • Bellevue 62, Deming 51 — Mike Gullett scored eight points in the first quarter and Charlie McIntyre grabbed 10 rebounds in the first half as Bellevue built a 12-point halftime lead.

        Deming never got closer than the final score.

        • Boone County 46, Dixie Heights 40 — Ben Brown made two free throws with 12 seconds to play to give the Rebels the lead for good at 42-40.

        Boone County's defense limited Dixie Heights to one 3-pointer in 19 tries.

        Boone County was led by Brown with 17 points and Robby Kellerman with 11 points. Russ Bramlage paced Boone County with 21 points.

        • Campbell County 66, Ryle 59 — The Camels took the lead midway through the fourth quarter at 50-49 and made nine-of-nine free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

        Kevin Reinhardt led Campbell County with 18 points and 12 rebounds and Steve Sigmon added 16 points and nine rebounds.

        Nick Feagan paced Ryle with 21 points.

        • Conner 83, Grant County 77 — Conner tied the game with 3:32 remaining on a 3-pointer from senior guard Chris Brown. Brown stole Grant County's next possession and sank another 3-pointer.

        Brown finished the game with 14 points.

        Junior forward Jeremy Stephenson scored a team-high 25 points for Conner.

        • Highlands 58, Holy Cross 47 — Craig Forbes scored nine of his 11 points in the fourth quarter, leading Highlands past Holy Cross.

        Ross Neltner had 17 points and 13 rebounds.

        Josh Beiting led all scorers with 26 for Holy Cross.

        • Newport 64, Ludlow 59 — Senior Adam Martin scored a game-high 30 points but it wasn't enough to stop Newport.

        Thomas Petty and Donald Smithson each registered double-doubles; Petty scored a team-high 26 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Smithson scored 15 while grabbing 15 rebounds.

        Andy Beard scored 14 points for Ludlow.

        Chad McCarter scored nine of his 19 points in the third quarter, helping Silver Grove score 20 of their 34 third quarter points in the first three minutes of play.

        Kyle Wells paced East Carolina with a team-high 27 points.
