Wyoming girls win sectional title

17-0 run lifts Cowboys over CHCA 49-34

Top-seeded Wyoming put together a 17-0 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters on its way to a Division III sectional championship win over fourth-seeded Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy 49-34, Friday at Mason.

The Cowboys, No.2 in the Enquirer's Division II-IV final coaches poll, will play the winner of Tuesday's Felicity-Georgetown game for a district championship at 11 a.m. next Saturday at Vandalia Butler High.

“I'm just glad to be going back to districts again,” said Wyoming coach Deb Gentile, whose team has won 11 sectional titles in the last 12 years.

Senior center Maria McCarthy scored a game-high 20 points — 14 in the second half — to lead the Cowboys. Freshman Robyn Snyder led the Eagles with 11.

The Cowboys trailed 26-22 after CHCA'a Brooke Holman hit a 3-pointer with 5:59 left in the third quarter. Wyoming junior Laura Verhaeghe countered with an 8-foot jumper in the lane to start the run. Junior Mary Bell scored five points during the outburst and McCarthy capped it with six consecutive points.

The Cowboys turned up their defensive pressure in the second half, with senior guards Monica Hoyles — who was saddled with two fouls in the first minute — and Jenni McGee trapping the CHCA guards inside the half-court line and forcing six turnovers while holding the Eagles scoreless for close to seven minutes.

“I don't like the way we responded to it,” CHCA coach Tim Southerland said. “That's what we worked on since last week, their pressure. They didn't do anything we didn't expect.”

Said Hoyles: “I think we were a little nervous in the first half. Once we settled down and decided to play our game, we were alright. We all kept our heads and did what we had to do.”

        CHCA (34) — Shipley 4 2 11, Snyder 4 0 8, Holman 3 0 7, Nichols 0 3 3, Humphrey 1 1 3, Trenz 1 0 2. Totals: 13 6 34.

        WYOMING (49) — Hoyles 2 3 7, Verhaeghe 6 1 13, McCarthy 7 6 20, Bell 2 1 5, McGee 1 2 4. Totals: 18 13 49.

        CHCA ....... 10 13 3 8—34

        Wyoming ....... 8 11 17 13—49

        3-pointers: C— Shipley, Holman. Records: C 19-4, W 19-3.
