Buffalo 66, Miami 61

Loss costly for RedHawks

The Cincinnati Enquirer

BUFFALO — Miami lost the game it could not afford to lose, falling to Buffalo 66-61 in overtime Saturday night.

The loss drops the RedHawks (13-14, 9-7 in the Mid-American Conference) into eighth place in the MAC.

A win would have put them in a four-way tie for fourth — a game out of third place overall in the MAC, with the third place team, Ohio University, coming to Oxford on Wednesday.

MAC East and West winners get a bye in the MAC Tournament, as does the third place team overall.

The fifth through eighth seeds in the MAC host first-round tournament games.

Miami will have to split its final two games — the RedHawks close the season at 9-6 Bowling Green March 3 — to earn the right to host.

Buffalo is 4-21 overall and 2-14 in the MAC. The Bulls are 5-46 since entering the MAC three seasons ago.

“To come in here 9-6 and lose the game is disappointing,” said Miami coach Charlie Coles. “We need to get to 10 wins, maybe 11, and we've got two tough games left.”

Alex Shorts led Miami with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Miami's second leading scorer, Jason Grunkemeyer, did not play.

Doug Davis came off the bench to score 12 points.

Mike Ensminger gave Miami a 55-53 lead 16 seconds into OT. But the Bulls outscored Miami 8-2 to take a 61-57 lead with 1:12 left.

Miami led 32-30 at half. But the RedHawks couldn't hit from anywhere in the secord half. They hit 25 percent from the field and 53.8 percent from the free throw line. They were 0-for-9 from 3-point range.
