What's new in area bookstores

By Sara Pearce
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Read Across America, a day dedicated to reading with children, is celebrated annually on March 2, the birthday of Theodor Geisel, a k a Dr. Seuss. This year's theme is “Oh, the Places You'll Go!” — the title of a Dr. Seuss book that climbs back onto best-seller lists each year at graduation time. The program is sponsored by the National Education Association. Events are scheduled nationwide; check your favorite bookstore or library to see what it has planned.

Cogan's Woods by Ron Ellis (Pruett Publishing Co.; $21.95). Kentuckian Ron Ellis' book debut is a memoir about growing up in the deep woods of Belden County, Ky. The book focuses on his relationship with his father. Signing: 2 p.m. Saturday , Barnes & Noble, 895 E. Kemper Road, Springdale, 671-3822.

The Vendetta Defense by Lisa Scottoline (HarperCollins; $25). The best-selling writer (Rough Justice, Final Appeal, Moment of Truth, Legal Tender) has a new legal thriller in stores today. A blood feud in Philadelphia's tight-knit Italian community leads to murder and a career-making case for lawyer Judy Carrier. It also puts her, and her client (who has confessed to the murder) in danger. Mix in romance.

Scarlet Feather by Maeve Binchy (Dutton; $25.95). The popular writer's 11th novel, in stores Monday, follows a pair of Dublin caterers. But as business takes off, their personal lives crumble. “Binchy's gift for creating a wide range of characters whose foibles and challenges make them lovable and real, coupled with her theme that genuine love can transform lives, add up to another crowd-pleaser,” says Publishers Weekly.
