Cincinnati trio set for Miami home finale
By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Rich Allendorf, Mike Ensminger and Jason Grunkemeyer play their final home game for Miami University at 7 p.m. today against Ohio University.
But coach Charlie Coles isn't ready to evaluate their impact on the program.
We won't know until it's over, Coles said. I hope they ain't finished. I hope they have a little something to add.
A final run to the Mid-American Conference Tournament title would cap nicely the careers of the three seniors. Miami has made it to the finals of the MAC all four of Coles' years as head coach. The RedHawks won only one of the finals in 1997.
Allendorf (St.Xavier), Ensminger (Oak Hills) and Grunkemeyer (Moeller) are all local products and good students. The three have been nominated for Verizon Academic All-America honors. Ensminger carries a 3.83 GPA in political science, Grunkemeyer a 3.35 GPA in physical education and Allendorf a 3.54 GPA in finance.
On the court, Grunkemeyer's scoring average has gone from 3.8 points to 8.9 to 11.6 in his three years at Miami. He transfered from Ohio. Ensminger and Allendorf were part of Coles' first recruiting class at Miami.
Allendorf has averaged 3.9 and 3.7 points the last two years. Ensminger leads the team in rebounding (6.0).
