Reality check

Injury plagues Rodger's Kucha tribe

By John Kiesewetter
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Here's a quick TV survival guide as the Tristate awaits the sixth episode of Survivor: The Australian Outback (8 p.m. today, Channels 12, 7) featuring Rodger Bingham, the Grant County High School industrial arts teacher from Crittenden, Ky.:

Goners: Five down, 10 to go, after Long Island bartender Kimmi Kappenberg, 28, was voted out of Kucha tribe.

Big question: Who gets hurt in the Kucha tribe tonight? Previews show Rodger consoling Elisabeth Filarski after “an accident at the Kucha camp.” But the New York Post reports that Rodger may have broken his collar bone falling off a horse during taping last fall, “based on the age given” in Internet reports about the accident.

The newspaper also says Kucha member Michael Skupin, 38, a Michigan software publisher, returned home from Australia “with his hands heavily bandaged.” Michael and his wife visited Rodger in Crittenden early last month.

Betting line: Rodger remains the most popular Survivor in the CBS.com viewers' poll, and the least popular to win the $1 million in odds posted by Intertops.com, an Internet sports betting site.

Rodger has widened his lead as the most popular Survivor with an 8.5 rating (up from 8.4) on a 1-10 scale. Elisabeth has dropped slightly (from 8.2 to 8.1) in second place. Manipulative Jerri Manthey continues to turn off viewers, with her rating falling from a 2.4 last week to an all-time low of 2.1.

The latest betting line: Colby Donaldson, 3-1; Alicia Calaway, 4 1/2-1; Michael, 5-1; Jeff Varner and Elisabeth, 6-1; Keith Famie and Tina Wesson, 7-1; Nick Brown, 8-1; Amber Brkich, 10-1; Jerri, 12-1; and Rodger, 15-1.

Fashion statement: Elisabeth wearing her green Kucha bandana as a halter top.

Rudy-like moment: Like Rudy on the first Survivor, Rodger's vast experience has come in handy. Last week he dug a new fire pit for the campfire; helped design a stretcher for the “reward” challenge competition; sharpened the ax and killed the chicken for dinner.

Wisdom of Rodger: “I don't enjoy killing animals neither. I don't really. But sometimes nobody wants to do it,” Rodger says about slaughtering the chicken.

Quote of the week: Elisabeth on Alicia, the New York personal trainer who clashed with Kimmi: “Alicia's in charge of telling people to do things. Alicia's also in charge of talking trash about people.”

On the Web: Read more about Rodger at KentuckyJoe.com, a new Internet site by Faith.Site.com, a Nashville-based network of Christian ministry Web sites. For Survivor info,go to survivornews.net.

Tonight: Besides what CBS calls the “emotional turmoil” after the injury, a big storm drenches the castaways — but doesn't douse the sparks between Jerri and Keith.
