Prather sets record at Turfway

Enquirer news services

Turfway Park's leading rider, Kris Prather, who broke the track record for most wins in a day with six Feb.11, set another standard Thursday when she rode her 86th winner of the Winter/Spring meet. Prather's record was set on Weekend Escape in the second race.

The mark eclipses Tony D'Amico's record of 85, set last year during the Winter/Spring meet.

Prather, a 22-year-old apprentice from Montana, has won four races on a card four times this winter.

        • Turfway officials announced the third purse increase of the Winter/Spring meet, effective immediately. The purse enhancement will be derived from Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund monies, which will result in a 15 percent increase in the KTDF supplement for maiden special weight and allowance contests. Turfway had previously announced purse increases on Feb.14 and Feb.27.

        • Keeneland and Turfway Park will offer $1 million in bonuses to owners and trainers of 3-year-old thoroughbreds who use the two tracks as a successful springboard to a Kentucky Derby win, track officials announced.

The Kentucky tracks will award $800,000 to the owner and $200,000 to the trainer of any horse who scores an improbable trifecta by winning Turfway's Grade II Spiral Stakes, Keeneland's Grade I Blue Grass Stakes or Grade II Lexington Stakes and the $1 million Kentucky Derby.
