Ex-Gov. Rhodes hospitalized
Officials mum on reason for 91-year-old's stay
The Associated Press
COLUMBUS Former Gov. James A. Rhodes, who ordered National Guard troops to Kent State University, where they shot and killed four students during a Vietnam War protest, has been hospitalized.
The 91-year-old Republican was in fair condition Friday at Ohio State University Medical Center.
A hospital spokeswoman, Jill Boatman, would not say when or why Mr. Rhodes was admitted.
Mr. Rhodes led the state for 16 years, longer than any other governor. He served two terms, from 1963 to 1971, and again from 1975 to 1983.
He tried a comeback in 1986 at age 77 but was soundly defeated by then-incumbent Richard Celeste.
Mr. Rhodes was governor in 1970 when Ohio National Guard troops opened fire at the Kent State protest. Four students were killed and nine were injured.
In recent years, Mr. Rhodes has lived in an assisted-living center in northwest Columbus.
