River Road fix-up stalls over money

By Walt Schaefer
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Question: The widening and improvement of River Road between Maryland Avenue and Mount Echo Road is finished and looks great. The new retaining wall is an attractive replacement to the 100-year-old crumbling wall of the past. What is the status of the next two phases of the project between Mount Echo Road and Fairbanks Avenue and the Waldvogel Viaduct and Maryland? - John Lewinski, Delhi Twp.

Answer: While both projects are planned and on the same schedule, construction funding has not been secured, said Joe Vogel, acting principal highway engineer for Cincinnati's Department of Transportation and Engineering. The city is pursuing funding for both projects and is optimistic they will be approved in three to five years, he said.

        Q. The Enquirer reported the intersection of Hamilton Avenue and Houston Road on the Colerain Township/Forest Park line as the worst for accidents in Hamilton County. A solution is the addition of left-turn arrows at Houston and the off ramp of Interstate 275 opposite it. The lanes are already marked, but a sign instructing motorists to yield is not working. - Ed Lemming, Colerain Township

        A. Kim Patton, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Transportation, said a study has been authorized and should be completed within the next month. The study will assess whether the intersection meets state criteria for left-turn arrows, she said.
Q: I'm wondering when the exit sign for Lebanon/South Lebanon at northbound Interstate 71 will be repaired. The lettering is unreadable after dark. - Suzie Haas, Lebanon

A: An Interstate 71 widening project has started from Western Row Road north to Ohio 48 and all signs within the project will be replaced, Mrs. Patton said. New signs are included in one of the last phases of the project that should be finished this year, she said.
