Holmes wears down Calvary Christian

By Ray Schaefer
Enquirer contributor

HEBRON — Holmes junior guard Erica Hallman didn't look like she has been nursing an injured back, and sophomore Jonna Patterson didn't play like someone who hurt an ankle.

Thursday, Hallman and Patterson helped end Calvary Christian's season. They scored 16 points apiece to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 70-52 victory in a girls Ninth Region Tournament first-round game at Conner.

The Lady Bulldogs will play Boone County, which is ranked No.1 in The Enquirer's Northern Kentucky coaches poll and No.6 in the state, in the semifinals at 8:15 p.m. Monday. The Lady Rebels beat Newport Central Catholic 39-36 Thursday night.

“Tournament time is when we play our best,” Hallman said of the Bulldogs.

Two plays illustrated how easily Holmes, which is ranked No.4 in Northern Kentucky, handled No.9 Calvary.

Late in the first quarter, Hallman had the ball at the top of the key. She blew past the Cougars' April Adams and found teammate Sarah Miller under the basket for a layup — part of a 17-3 run over the last 5:47 of the quarter.

“We dug ourselves a hole in the first quarter that was going to be hard to get out of,” Calvary coach Dave Stockman said. “And Holmes didn't let us get out.”

The second key play came in the final minute of the third. After Calvary's Sarah Woods closed Holmes' lead to 44-31, Hallman hurried down court, drew three defenders and found Valencia Jackson with a behind-the-back pass that Jackson turned into a layup.

“I told my girls Calvary won (25) games,” Holmes coach Alison McCarthy said. “... We prepared for them. Our athleticism got them tired.”

Senior Lisa Van Berkel led Calvary (25-6) with 19 points, and Woods added 18.

        HOLMES (70) — V. Jackson 5 3 13, Collins 0 1 1, Holly Herindon 1 0 3, Brinkman 2 0 4, Wimzie 1 1 3, Humphrey 2 0 5, Hallman 6 2 16, Patterson 7 0 16, Heather Herindon 2 0 4, Miller 2 1 5. Totals: 27 8 70.

        CALVARY CHRISTIAN (52) — Woods 5 8 18, Blaine 2 0 4, Adams 2 0 4, Curry 3 1 7, Van Berkel 7 2 19. Totals: 19 11 52.

        Holmes19 13 14 24 - 70

        Calvary Christian 5 12 14 21 - 52

        3-point goals: H-Hallman 2, Patterson 2, Heather Herindon, Humphrey; CC-VanBerkel 3. Records: H 17-12, CC 25-6.
