Elder, West Hi on collision course
By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
One of Cincinnati's longest-standing boys basketball rivalries could be renewed Saturday at Xavier University's Cintas Center.
If Elder defeats Springfield South and Western Hills beats Vandalia Butler in Thursday's Division I regional semifinals, the rivals will meet for a second time this season this time for a berth in the state final four.
Western Hills, ranked No.1 in The Cincinnati Enquirer's preseason Division I poll and No.2 behind Winton Woods in the final poll, suffered its only to a Cincinnati team at Elder (63-54) on Jan.8.
Elder has dominated the series, with 74 victories to West Hi's 15. Elder coach Joe Schoenfeld's record against Western Hills is 9-2 in nine seasons.
The Division II regional tournament Wednesday and Saturday at Wright State University's Nutter Center has a Greater Catholic League North flavor: Kettering Alter, Roger Bacon and Purcell Marian.
In the opening semifinal game, GCL North champion Alter plays Purcell Marian. Roger Bacon meets Columbus Mifflin in the 8 p.m. game.
Although it appears that coach Bill Brewer's Roger Bacon team has the easier opponent, Alter faces the difficult task of defeating Purcell Marian for a third time this season.
The Knights defeated the Cavaliers 54-43 at Purcell Marian on Jan.7 and 51-39 on Feb.9 at Alter.
