Brossart reaches Tenth Region finals

Lady 'Stangs meet Estill Co.

By George Schutte
Enquirer Contributor

The pressure was on Bishop Brossart senior guard Jenna Schultz. And twice in the final 20 seconds she delivered.

Schultz made three of four free throws with time running down to give the Lady 'Stangs a 46-44 win over Harrison County in the Tenth Region semifinals at Campbell County.

Brossart plays Estill County for the Regional championship at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Campbell County High School with the winner advancing to the Sweet 16 in Bowling Green.

After failing to convert a basket with less than 30 seconds to play, tight defense propelled Brossart, with Casey Geiman stealing the ball at midcourt with 20 seconds to go and finding Schultz heading to the basket.

Schultz was fouled on the play with 19.2 seconds to go. After missing the first free throw, Schultz nailed the second.

On the next inbounds play, Harrison County drove down, but Schultz intercepted a pass underneath the basket and drove downcourt before being fouled with 6.2 seconds left.

“I knew everyone was counting on me,” Schultz said. “I looked at the other seniors and was confident I could make them.”

Harrison County never got off a final shot.

The Fillies started the fourth quarter on a tear, taking a 36-31 lead just over two minutes into the quarter.

Brossart standout guard Katie Schwegmann scored the Lady Stangs' next eight points to pull within two, 43-41.

“A lot of good things happen when she touches the ball,” Brossart coach Ray Kues said. “I told her I wanted her to have the ball in her hands whenever possible in the fourth quarter.”

Last season Brossart lost in the first round of the regional.

“Last year's loss was disappointing,” Schwegmann said. “We didn't want to go through that again. We wanted to make it to the finals.”

Schwegmann finished with 20 points, with Stephanie Clark adding 11 points.
