Highlands 40, Holy Cross 36
Junior center Tara Boothe's 15 points and freshman guard Abbi Gibson's 13 helped the defending Ninth Region champions to a 40-36 victory at Conner.
Holy Cross nearly wiped out a 13-point Highlands lead, coming to within 38-36 with 42 seconds left on Ashley Noll's field goal
I'm real proud of my kids, Holy Cross coach Rob Kues said.
They played their hearts out in the second half when we needed it.
Both teams needed some offense Monday.
Highlands was 12-of-44 from the field, 4-of-19 from 3-point range and 12-of-30 from the free throw line: Holy Cross was 14-of-39 from the field and 5-of-14 from the line to go with 23 turnovers.
I'd like to think we couldn't shoot any worse, Highlands coach Luci Cecil said.
With 4:25 left, a foul against Holy Cross negated a field goal that would have cut Highlands' lead to 31-27. Then, Gibson hit a 3-pointer.
That's a (5-point swing), Kues said. And it took away our momentum.
