Purcell Marian regional preview

Alter—C Adam Waleskowski (6-8 Sr.), F Jeff Penno (6-5 Jr.), F Dave Kohls (6-5 Jr.), G Trey Jones (6-4 Sr.), G Mark Laumann (6-1 Sr.).

        • HOW THEY GOT HERE: Purcell Marian—beat Little Miami 55-29; beat Ross 54-34; beat McNicholas 70-65; beat Dayton Colonel White 59-53. Alter—beat Preble Shawnee 73-35; beat Dayton Dunbar 63-54; beat Dayton Christian 64-47.

        • NOTABLE: Alter beat Greater Catholic League North rival Purcell Marian twice during the regular season, 54-43 and 51-39. The Knights were ranked No.4 in the final Associated Press Ohio Division II poll.

        Coach Joe Petrocelli's 37-year record at Alter is 656-196. Along the way, the Knights won two state titles (1978, '99) and reached the state semifinals four other times ('75, '93, '94, '96).

        Adam Waleskowski, a 6-foot-8 center who will play at Florida State next season,is the Knights' inside scorer. Jeff Penno, Trey Jones and Dave Kohls are the top outside threats.

        Purcell Marian, Division II state runner-up last season, got off to a slow start at 7-6. But the Cavaliers turned the corner when freshman Billy Finnell took over at point guard, winning nine of their last 11. Xavier-bound Keith Jackson is the Cavaliers' leading scorer. Tony Fulks, Brandon Elliott and Trent Calloway have come on strong during the tournament drive.
