Schwegman rallies Brossart to Sweet Sixteen

ALEXANDRIA Maybe one player can beat an entire team.Bishop Brossart senior guard Katie Schwegmann was that one player in Tuesday's girls 10th Region title game.
Her 5-foot drive with nine seconds left the last of her 32 points sent the Lady 'Stangs to their first Sweet Sixteen with a 60-59 victory over Estill County at Campbell County Middle School.
Brossart will play Seventh Region champion Louisville Dupont Manual at 1 p.m. March 21 at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green.
A dream come true, Schwegmann said.
It was a dream come true for at least two reasons. The Lady 'Stangs could forget second-place finishes to Montgomery County in 1998-99 and last year's first-round loss to Estill County, a game in which Schwegmann broke her nose and suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
I was thinking about last year and all the hard work it took to come back, said Schwegmann, who also had 15 rebounds Tuesday.
Brossart trailed 59-58 with 12.9 seconds to play. Then Schwegmann scored.
Let's just say it's the biggest shot she's ever made, Brossart coach Ray Kues said.
But Schwegmann, Kues and everybody else on Brossart's bench will say Tuesday's win was a team effort.
Sophomores Ashley Seiter and Casey Geiman each scored two points to cut Estill County's lead to 43-37 with 53 seconds left in the third quarter. Schwegmann narrowed it to 43-40 on a field goal and free throw with 1.7 seconds left.
Schwegmann played with foul trouble over the final 7:14 of the game, but senior Carrie Clift scored seven of her nine points over the final 2:48, and sophomore Ashley Clark added two for Brossart.
Last quarter, I felt I had to show everybody I could do it, Clift said.
With 30.7 seconds remaining, Brossart senior Jenna Schultz fouled the Lady Engineers' Kristie Cole, who responded by throwing an elbow and fouling out on the subsequent technical foul.
(Cole) took out Katie with an elbow (last year) and broke her nose ... Kues said. That's what got us fired up.
Before she left, Cole made one of two free throws for Schultz's foul. But Schwegmann made both technical shots to set up the finale.
After Schwegmann's basket, Estill's Kara Newton threw the ball inbounds to teammate Jessica Puckett. She passed to Jamie Beeler, whose 25-foot shot fell short.
ESTILL COUNTY (59) Birchfield 5 2 12, Beeler 2 3 7, Puckett 6 1 14, Cole 4 3 11, Turpin 3 1 7, Newton 3 0 8. Totals: 23 10 59.
