Get to it

A guide to help make your day

Going out

Theater: Donald Margulies' witty and edgy relationship drama Dinner with Friends, still burning up Broadway, gets the local treatment when Ensemble Theatre opens its version at 8 p.m. today, 1127 Vine St., Over-the-Rhine. Through April 1. $20-$25. 421-3555.

Irish tale: Best-selling author Nuala O'Faolain, who asked the question Are You Somebody? in her last book, resurfaces with a frantic and feverish tale of stormy family relationships in Ireland. She signs and discusses My Dream of You, 7 p.m. today, Joseph-Beth Booksellers, Rookwood Pavilion, Norwood. 396-8960.

Film fest: The Israeli Jewish Film Festival chugs right along with Train of Life, all about a 1941 Jewish village that organizes a fake deportion train to get the heck out of Europe. Also: Every Time We We Said Goodbye, about a wounded gentile soldier who falls in love with a Sephardic Jew in Jerusalem during World War II. 7:30 p.m. today, Esquire Theater, 320 Ludlow Ave., Clifton. 985-1520.

Musical adventure: BarrelHouse Brewing Company uncorks the neo-jam band Ominous Seapodsfor an evening of improvisational riffs and psychedelic musings — just like the old days. 10 p.m. today, 22 E. 12th St., Over-the-Rhine. $3. 421-3555.

Staying In

TV picks: This sitcom breaks rules: no laugh track, few punch lines and a lead character who's easy to dislike. That's Mike McNeil (Denis Leary), a New York detective who's sleeping with his wife and his girlfriend. He smokes, drinks and pops pills. But the show pulls viewers in. The Job, 9:30 p.m., Channels 9, 2.

        • The splits: Drew is into alternate personalities: In one show, pious to impress his boss; in the other, a swinger to impress his insurance agent. The Drew Carey Show, 8 and 9 p.m., Channels 9, 2.

The Goods (What's in stores today)

CD picks: Cincinnati's own Over The Rhine is back in the big leagues today with Films for Radio (Virgin/Backporch; $16.98 CD only), a moody set of pop-rock that marks the band's return to a major label.

        • Eric Clapton is the week's other big release with Reptile ($18.98 CD, $12.98 cassette), a laid-back set that ranges from bluesy (“Come Back Baby,” “I Want a Little Girl”) to covers of J.J. Cale (“Travelin' Light”) and James Taylor (“Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight”).

Planning Ahead

24 hours out: Red hot rap duo Outkast, nothing if not equipped with all the right moves, struts its stuff at 8 p.m. Thursday, Firstar Center. $29.50. 562-4949.

48 hours out: Jack Quinn's Restaurant and Irish Pub, pulls out the stops for the beloved saint. St. Patrick's Day party opens with a 4 p.m. Friday kickoff that progresses into a street-closing, Irish-music playing all-weekend blowout. 112 E. Fourth St., Covington. (859) 491-6699.

72 hours 'til Saturday: Madcap Productions Puppet Theatre drops the curtain on the 2000-2001 season with two weekends of Our Favorite Fairy Tales. 1 and 3 p.m. Saturdays-Sundays through March 25, Cincinnati Art Museum theater, Eden Park. $6-$8. 721-2787.

Get To It appears daily. Send items to Get To It, Tempo, Cincinnati Enquirer, 312 Elm St., Cincinnati 45202; fax: 768-8330.
