FAIRBORN — With the game on the line, Fenwick senior Joe Kreke responded.

Kreke scored 16 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter as the Falcons held off Waynesville 68-62 in a Division III regional semifinal at Wright State University's Nutter Center Thursday night.

With the Falcons leading by five points with 30 seconds to play, Kreke made two free throws to help seal the victory.

The Falcons advance to play Casstown Miami East at 3 p.m. Saturday at Wright State.

Fenwick led 43-40 one minute into the fourth quarter when Kreke fired back- to-back 3-pointers and made two free throws in the span of a minute to push the Falcons' lead to nine points.

“He's the person we want with the ball with the game on the line,” Fenwick forward Charlie Martin said. “He's been doing it all year for us.”

Kreke was 10-of 14 from the foul line and 2-of-3 from 3-point range to provide an answer for Waynesville guard Scott Sesslar, who scored 13 points in the fourth quarter.

“We needed to hit those 3s,” Kreke said. “They got our esteem up and gave us a big lift.”

After quick baskets by Sesslar and Chris Jones at the start of the fourth quarter, Fenwick responded with four consecutive 3-pointers, two by Kreke and one each by Matt Burns and Tony McCormick.

“I was never comfortable in the fourth quarter,” Fenwick coach Pat Kreke said. “We were up by 12 and on the foul line, but I knew they had the shooters to get back in the game.”

Waynesville almost erased a 13-point deficit, pulling to 66-62 with 28.5 seconds to play, but couldn't get closer.
