Pianists keep duels friendly

Both twins talented

By Sue Kiesewetter

When David Mou played piano recently with the Seven Hills Sinfonietta, there was no one prouder than his twin brother Danny - whom David had beaten in a College-Conservatory of Music competition to earn his spot in the program.

David played the first movement of Haydn's Concerto in D Major in the Preparatory Piano Concerto competition while his brother played the third movement and came in second. For two weeks before the competition both boys increased their daily practice from one hour to two as they perfected the piece.

“I thought one would win, but I wasn't sure which one,” said their CCM instructor, Michael Chertock. “They are very talented musicians - and talented at everything they do. It's a miracle they have time to practice with all their interests.”

The boys have studied piano and theory at CCM for five years, arriving for their lessons every Saturday at 7 a.m. Next year they will take a jazz performance class at Seven Hills Upper School, where the 14-year-old Westwood teens are freshmen.

Although both enjoy piano - they began taking lessons at age 7 in Beijing, China where they lived for two years - neither plans on pursuing piano as a career. David said he would like to become a doctor, while Danny is more interested in something in science or computers.

“I won't drop music,” Da vid said. “I don't want to make it my major but I don't want to drop it.”

The brothers say they are one another's biggest supporters in all their endeavors, enjoying a friendly competition. In school, Danny has a 4.21 grade point average, David a 4.05. Both enjoy tennis and basketball, although they took this year off. Together, they are building a computerized robot. Each has a Web page featuring designer cars.

“We have the same classes and the same friends,” Danny said.

When they are not pursuing their studies or interests, David and Danny can be found helping out at The Village Wok, the Sycamore Township restaurant owned by their parents, John and Sophia Mou.
