Fair helps owners preserve old houses




The Cincinnati Enquirer

        An Old House Fair — a home and garden show for the owners and potential buyers of old houses — will be next weekend at Old St. George, 42 Calhoun St. in Corryville.

        More than 40 exhibitors — restoration contractors, artisans, architects and suppliers — will participate in the event, sponsored by the Cincinnati Preservation Association (CPA).

        During the fair, Ken Hughes, president of Decorative Restorations, will play “Old House Doctor” and give free individual consultations. Bring photographs, floor plans, drawings and fabric samples of a project to discuss.

        In addition, the fair will offer 14 workshops on preservation techniques. The workshop schedule:

Next Saturday
        1. Historic Trends in Ohio Architecture, 10-11 a.m., fee: $5. Barbara Powers, head of Planning, Inventory and Registration for the Ohio Historic Preservation Office, will discuss the influences that shaped Ohio's architectural heritage.

        2. Restoring Ornamental Plaster, 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m., fee: $10. Ken Clift, chairman of the Newport Historic Preservation Commission, and Paul Blasing, co-founder of East Row Restoration, will demonstrate techniques for restoring damaged plaster cornice molds with a “horse” and the lost art of using original plaster features to create a “mother” mold.

        3. Better Than New: Maintaining Your Old House, 11 a.m.-noon, fee: $5. Mariangela Pfister, historian with the Ohio Historic Preservation Office, will tell how to be a good steward of an historic property.

        4. How to Research the History of Your Old House, 1-2 p.m., fee: $5. Margo Warminski, historic preservation consultant, will give research tips and discuss the nomination process for the National Register of Historic Places.

    When: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. next Saturday and noon-5 p.m. April 1.

    Admission: $5 for association members, $7 for non-members and free for children 12 and under. (Workshops extra.) Free parking in University of Cincinnati's Corry Garage on Scioto Street.

        5. Holistic Restorations: How to Plan and Execute an Interior Restoration, 1-2 p.m. (tour 4-5 p.m.), fee: $25. Mr. Hughes and preservationist Stacey Woolley will explain how to plan and execute an interior restoration in keeping with the character and style of an old house. As a case study, participants will tour the Adams/Woolley House, an Arts & Crafts-style home with Stickley furniture and stained glass windows.

        6. Rehabilitating Historic Wood Windows, 2:30-5 p.m., fee: $10. Link Luddington, curator of the Lanier Mansion in Madison, Ind., will demonstrate window-repair techniques.

        7. Preservation Easements, 3-4 p.m., fee: $5. Beth Sullebarger, CPA executive director, will explain the benefits of donating an easement on your historic house.

        8. 617 Vine Street: A Case Study in Restoration, 4-5 p.m., fee: $5. David Day, designer, artist and preservationist, will explain the work that went in the restoration of the former Cincinnati Enquirer Building.
       

April 1

        9. Historic Roofs and Box Gutters, 12:30-3 p.m., fee: $10. John Chan, vice president of Durable Slate Co., will give an overview of historic roofing materials, explain roofing maintenance and repair and discuss roof drainage systems and box and half-round gutters.

        10. Back of the Big House: The Importance of Historic Outbuildings, 1-2 p.m., fee: $5. Mark Hornbaker, president of Acanthus Group, will give a slide presentation on the construction and methodology of summer kitchens, sheds and smokehouses.

        11. Rehabilitation Tax Credits, 2-3 p.m., fee: $5. Alex Weldon, historic preservation consultant, will discuss how to obtain a federal income tax credit if you are planning to restore an income-producing historic property.

        12. Through a Glass Brightly: Historic Stained and Beveled Glass, 2:30-5 p.m., fee: $10. Timothy J. Heil and David A. Danenhauer, owners of River City Art Glass and Restoration, will discuss the manufacture of 19th- and 20th-century art glass and demonstrate how glass panels can be removed, restored and returned.

        13. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Hazardous Materials Abatement in the Old House, 3-4 p.m., fee: $5. Michael Crandall, president of Indoor Environmental Services, will discuss potentially dangerous substances, such as lead, asbestos and mold.

        14. Fun With Fiberglass: Cornices, Columns and Coping, 4-5 p.m., fee: $5. Bill Krantz, chemical engineering professor at the University of Cincinnati, and Eric Kilb, owner of the Glass Hand, will talk about duplicating architectural details with fiberglass, using the Ibold House in Clifton as the case study.
