Miami's Mason recovering from stabbing
By Neil Schmidt
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Chester Mason, a Miami University basketball player stabbed in the chest early Saturday while apparently trying to break up a fight, is out of the hospital and back in his classes at Miami.
He's sore, but he's doing very, very well, Miami coach Charlie Coles said. He won't be a peacemaker again; that's what he told me.
Mason, a first-year player, and freshman football player Alphonso Hodge were both stabbed when leaving a party near the uptown area of Oxford about 1a.m. Saturday, university officials said. Mason was flown by AirCare to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. Hodge received only a superficial wound to his shoulder.
The object which hasn't been confirmed as a knife hit Mason in the upper sternum area. He was released Sunday evening.
Coles said there doesn't appear to be damage that could prevent Mason from playing next season. Mason, who practiced with the RedHawks this winter but sat out the season as a partial qualifier, is expected to challenge for a starting guard spot next season.
