Dusing earns relay berth to worlds
The Associated Press
AUSTIN, Texas Olympic swimmer Nate Dusing, who earned his trip to the Sydney Games by .01 seconds, missed his first shot at an individual berth at the World Championships by .02 seconds Thursday.
Dusing (Covington Catholic) finished third in the 200-meter freestyle at the Phillips 66 U.S. Nationals, clocking in at 1:49.33, just behind his University of Tex as teammate, Scott Goldblatt (1:49.31).
Southern Cal freshman Klete Keller won the race (1:48.89). The top two finishers in each event qualify for July's world meet.
Dusing, however, still will go to Japan; the top six finishers in the 100 and 200 freestyles qualify for relays at worlds.
Goldblatt, who qualified ninth Thursday, swam the 200 final only because another Longhorn, Josh Davis, scratched.
Sycamore graduate Dan Ketchum (Michigan) finished seventh in the 200 final (1:50.96), and St.Xavier senior Jayme Cramer finished 26th (1:53.73) after preliminaries.
Cramer also finished 19th in the 100 backstroke in 58.06.
Ursuline's Whitney Myers finished 22nd in the 400 freestyle in 4:21.29.
