Kent State students appeal commemoration decision

The Associated Press

KENT, Ohio — Kent State University student leaders want to reverse a decision barring funding for this year's commemoration of the 1970 shootings that killed four students and wounded nine.

The Undergraduate Student Senate asked Tuesday that its allocation committee reconsider a decision not to fund the annual commemoration next month.

The committee voted overwhelmingly March 19 not to fund the commemoration. “It will be tough to overcome a 7-1 decision,” allocation committee member Mike Chadsey said.

Committee members had said they thought the task force's funding presentation was incomplete. The committee meets Monday to reconsider.

This year marks the 31st anniversary of the shootings by Ohio National Guardsmen trying to quell an anti-war protest.
