Best and worst of week in sports

The Enquirer sports department's look at who rated — good and bad — this week in sports:

Top five

        1. Tiger, the golfer: He's the best driver, best iron player and best putter in the big tournaments. That's kind of a tough combination to beat. No one mentioned this Masters weekend, but he's got another streak of three straight tournament wins.

        2. Tiger, the TV star: Tiger whips NASCAR. Tiger whips the NBA. If Vince McMahon wants to save the XFL, have Tiger try to make field goals with a 3 wood. CBS ratings for the Sponsor's Name Open this week will be a fraction what they would be if Tiger were playing. The only ratings records he doesn't break when he's in the hunt on Sunday are his own.

        3. Tiger, the endorser: The guy is, well, money in the bank. Nike pays him $20 million a year, and it's a bargain.

        4. Tiger, the guy: He's gracious. He respects the guys he beats. He never sounds boastful. And he's looks like he's having fun. He's just the kind of guy you'd like to play a round of golf with.

        5. Tiger, the disappearing act: We won't see him for a month while he takes a break. Where does the guy go?

Bottom five

        1. David Duval, Phil Mickelson, et al.: Make a putt when it counts. As great as Tiger is, it's going to get old if he doesn't have a rival. Which begs the question: Whatever happened to Sergio Garcia?

        2. Michael Jordan: Stay retired. We love the memories. Leave them as they are.

        3. Jim Bowden: He botched the Justin Atchley transaction. He didn't put Junior on the disabled list. Former wonder boy isn't doing so wonderfully this year. Wonder why?

        4. Troy Aikman: Your tearful retirement speech didn't break us up. The retirement came only when you couldn't get another job playing in the NFL.

        5. Soccer: Stampede kills 43 in South Africa. This happens in no other sport. That's it: Ban it.
