Caesar Creek welcomes spring

State park offers pair of programs

WAYNESVILLE — Want to enjoy spring at Caesar Creek State Park? It has two opportunities for nature lovers this month.

For folks who want to give Mother Nature a hand, there's an opportunity to volunteer during the annual Green Up Day, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Tasks range from clearing brush to tree planting to picking up roadside litter, and there's a reward: park staff will host a cookout for participants after the work is done.

“We need about 600 volunteers,” said park ranger Kim Baker. “We usually get between 500 and 600 each year, but we especially need teen-agers over 15 and adults, people who can work unsupervised, who can lift and move.”

The project is great for service clubs, 4H members and other organizations that can muster a group and pitch in, Ms. Baker said. Volunteers should wear sturdy footwear and work clothes. Gloves are a good idea.

To sign up, call the park office, (513) 897-1050.

The park's Nature Center is also issuing a call for Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts who would like to participate in “Scouting the Outdoors” on April 28.

This reservations-only event helps youngsters learn about local forests, wildlife and geology. According to park naturalist Carol Fassig, the scouts will hike a woodland trail, enact a forest food web, hunt for fossils and plant tree seedlings. The program takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There's still room for participants, but the registration deadline is today. To sign up, call the Nature Center at (513) 897-2437.
